SBCC Building Codes

The 2015 editions of the model codes with Washington State Amendments went into effect on July 1, 2016.

The anticipated effective date for the 2018 codes was July 1, 2020. Due to Covid-19, the Governor has issued a proclamation extending this date to November 1, 2020*. 

*At the June 26, 2020 Special Council meeting, the Council voted to extend this effective date to February 1, 2021.

The state amendments to the codes can be accessed by clicking on the menu to the left. The base model code, adopted by reference, should be available at the reference desk at your local library or at the permit counter of your local building department.

The National Electrical Code is adopted and amended by the Department of Labor and Industries. Please see their code site at http://www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Electrical

State Building Code

The Washington State Building Code is comprised of the model code editions listed below with Washington State Amendments. For your convenience, the Washington State Energy Code is available in its entirety. The 2015 editions of the codes listed below are currently in effect.

  • 2015 International Building Code (includes the 2015 International Existing Building Code and 2009 ICC/ANSI A117.1)
  • 2015 International Residential Code
  • 2015 International Mechanical Code (includes the 2015 International Fuel Gas Code, 2014 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code (NFPA 58), and 2015 National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) as it applies to LP Gas installations
  • 2015 International Fire Code
  • 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code
  • 2015 Washington State Energy Code

State Building Code

The State Building Code (SBC) is the minimum construction requirement for the state of Washington and includes:

  • 2015 International Building Code with statewide amendments
  • ICC/ANSI A117.1-09, Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, with statewide amendments
  • 2015 International Residential Code with statewide amendments
  • 2015 International Mechanical Code with statewide amendments
  • 2015 International Fuel Gas Code with statewide amendments (part of the IMC adoption)
  • 2014 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code (NFPA 58)
  • 2015 National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) (for LP Gas installation only)
  • 2015 International Fire Code with statewide amendments
  • 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code with statewide amendments
  • 2015 Washington State Energy Code 
  • 2015 International Existing Building Code with statewide amendments found in the IBC
  • 2015 International Swimming Pool and Spa code
